When should I change the timing belt in a 1993 honda accord?

I just bought a used 93 Honda Accord. How can I tell if the timing belt has been replaced? How often should it be replaced. The car has 128K miles on it.

  1. It should be replaced every 100k, although they are made to last up to 200k.. There's no real way to tell, but if it only has 128k and the timing belt was changed at or around 100k, check out the water pump n see if it looks relatively new b/c you swap 'em out together.

  2. Unless there is solid documentation of when it was replaced, you have to do it right away. The engine will be severely damaged if it fails. Even if it has been changed, when will you know to change it if you don't do it now?

Timing belts are rubber products and are as sensitive (I say more sensitive) to time as to miles. It should be changed every 7 years or 90K miles – later Honda intervals are longer. It is even possible the belt is the original, 18 years old!

Be sure to replace the water pump when the timing belt is replaced – the labor is mostly the same and it is heartbreaking to have to replace a water pump a year after a timing belt is replaced. Use only low silicate antifreeze – the old green stuff is death on Honda water pumps, as I learned the hard way. In 1999 Honda came out with green long life antifreeze to replace their classic blue antifreeze, so now it is hard to tell what is in the car unless you put it in yourself.

  3. It should be changed every 90,000 miles so for piece of mind i would change it now and then not have to worry about it . While you are in there change the water pump also . Now if you look at the front of the engine you can see part of the water pump and if it looks new then the timing belt was probably changed then .

  4. you can't lose by replacing it. If that has an interference fit engine and that belt goes your engine is pretty much toast.By comparison that belt is cheap. When in doubt change it out.
