What are the symptoms of my 2000 nissan maxima having a antifreeze leak?

After driving for about 20 minutes it starts to run loud and rough…it does this for about 1 minute then it stops and does it again maybe 10 minutes later. Someone who is not so credible told me last night that I currently don't have any antifreeze in the car and may have a leak.

Aside for seeing the leak from underneath the vehicle would there be any symptoms I would have while driving?

Also, I believe the car is leaking power steering fluid because I had it filled a few weeks ago because of noisies with the steering while turning the wheel. The noises stopped after adding the pfluid and now it's doing the same thing again.

Pls help I can't afford to be taken advantage of at the shop.

  1. I'm sorry to tell you this. But if your running your car so hot that it starts running badly. You've probably damaged a head gasket. don't worrie about the rest. Too little too late is the name of the game for you. My advice for women who are concerned about being taken advantage of is. Find a dealer you like. Service your car regularly and your local nissan likely would have found the leak before you destroyed your motor. Which I believe you have! I'm a Toyota Master Tech. And I have all my services performed at a dealer I don't work for. Its called preventative maintenance and its not cheap but it is necessary.

  2. The number one symptom would be overheating of your engine… If it was severely overheated, you may feel the engine running rough.. The signs to look for are temperature gauge maxing out, smell of coolant, leaking coolant..

  3. then start asking friends and family for a good shop to go too, running out of antifreeze is a good way to blow the engine, and letting a power steering leak go will destroy the pump costing even more money. So right now you have two repairable leaks that may cost 400 max to fix, keep driving and its going to be in the thousands of dollars. Stop screwing around, and find a good mechanic.

  4. first thing, if you put antefreeze it will not help your problem at all, as to your leak, fix it sometimes when the power sterrring pump is low on fluid it will make noises specially every turn,
if ( love the if game) If you were running the car, yes it will get hot and the needle should move or stay around the mid section at all times when running, if its showing you that is cold (not even close to half way) its probably a bad sensor or gauge, the engine NO engine in this world will run at the low end of the temp gauge. What cause the gauge to go bad? many things one including over heating your engine, to me i dont think you have, and even if you did, it doesnts mean your heads are blown, I have over heated my engine on my 2002 before its inevetable it will happen.
one symtom is, your engine will start yerking and will shut dowm (most cars have this as a safety for the engine).
and last: if your car is over heating and you dont notice it because you do have a faulty gauge, the sound coould be the water pump.

  5. Here's a fact everybody missed: When cooling systems loose enough coolant the dash temperature gauge is no longer accurate. The electronic temperature sending unit in the engine water-jacket must "contact" the coolant for it to read the temperature gauge on the dash properly.

You have four choices: #1. Show some initiative by jacking the car up on jack-stands, find the leak and make repairs yourself. #2. Hire someone to look at the car to tell you what needs to be repaired and make repairs yourself. #3. Hire someone to make repairs properly. #4. Continue to drive the car as is, ruin the engine entirely, junk the car and dust off your Schwinn Bicycle.

  6. temp gauges are often called fools gauges or idiot lights for a reason. Unless a car is almost brand new the owner should be checking the fluid levels at least once a week! a temp sensor or gauge can freeze in position and fail to change! this leaves you in a bad way and a shop smiling. loosing power steering fluid from a leak causes air to enter the pump and causing that noise. the condition you explained though with the rough running get smooth and return doesn't fit an over heat issue though. sounds like you have an issue going with some sensor making the motor revert to a "cold setting" or simpler put the car thinks it needs to warm up when its already warm. this causes the engine to run too rich and try to stall from excess fuel and can cause overheating. this would be best to get a computer scan done for codes as I suspect you will have several.
