Transmission oil accidentally placed in motor oil compartment? Issues involved?

So I have a brand new Audi 2011. I went to put motor oil into my engine, but accidentally put in transmission fluid, which says it reduces friction made by Castrol oil. When I put it in, the oil level reached the maximum level and my MMI says please drain oil. Now considering that the transmission oil is only a minor fraction of motor oil mixed with the transmission fluid would it be safe to drain all the fluid then refill it with the correct motor oil, but not change the filter since I don't have the part? I need to only get my car to an Audi dealership that is 60 miles away, so I can have a proper oil change and service done. Would it be safe to do this or would it be better to just tow my car? I really don't have cash to tow 60 miles. Please help! I need to be able to fix my car….

  1. Thats what I want to know? did you start the car? if not good the tranny fluid is all in the pan at the bottom of the engine dump the oil pan and let drain fill with fresh oil and it should be fine, I suggest not telling the dealership due to warranty issues but you will not have damaged anything anyway. good luck, its easy to do now adays .

  2. Take your car to an independent mechanic and have him change the oil for you.

Do not take your car to any of the franchise type auto service places.

Also, the only time I ever recommend using a dealer is if they are paying for the work done, I.E., warranty work.

Dealers charge too much and in many cases will have just one Journeyman mechanic in the service department. The remainder of the mechanics are usually just apprentices.

If you don't mind paying to have a trainee learn to do the work, by all means, go to the dealer, otherwise, stay away.

  3. Well,
When you change your oil you can never get 100% of all the oil out it is impossible to do. But now the question is how much transmission oil did you add? did you run it after adding it? If you didnt run it after adding the wrong fluid you will just be able to drain the oil yourself and refill with the proper oil and be on your way because the bad oil has not had a chance to circulate throughout your engine. But if you did run it and you only added a little bit to top up a low dipstick you should be alright just draining the oil, change filter, and refill with proper grade with no problems aswell. if it has been totally filled with transmission oil and you ran it. get it towed is the best idea.
I have also known people who have topped up there engine oil with gear oil accidently and had no ill effects but who knows what that has done in the long run.

  4. If you added a little bit of fluid than just drive it to the dealer. However if you poured a whole litre in there than you may want to have it towed in as this will be alot cheaper than replacing a seized engine.

  5. ATF won't hurt the engine.Just drain it out and put fresh oil in it.As a matter of fact back in the day we put ATF(about half a quart) in the engine and ran it for about 50 miles before an oil change to help free up sticky lifters.
