How to sort out the mpg on my audi a4 display?

My husband and I bought a 2009 Audi A4 a couple of days ago, and on the dashboard behind the steering wheel there is a display which shows MPH, MPG, miles done, temperature etc. This was all working just fine but now the MPG is jumping up and down from really low to really high all the time we are driving and we can't seem to get it back to normal. I'm sure I've probably pressed something or changed something we shouldn't have, as with it being new and us trying to work it all out we've been looking around the system to try and work it all out. Weve checked the manual but can't seem to find anything about this. If anyone else has had this problem or can tell me how to fix it I would be really grateful. thanks.

  1. I believe you have fiddled with the button which changes between your settings on the display screen.

It might have been the case for you that when the mpg was "normal", it was displaying your average mpg.
The readings started being erratic because you switched the mode to "instantaneous mpg reading".
(which measures the mpg of the car at that very moment, with that kind of driving behaviour)

The 5.21 hour probably refers to the duration you spent driving the car from the time you last started the ignition.
(well, at least that's what I know from my parents' A6)

To revert the system back to the average mpg mode, aka. "normal" mode, you might want to press the same button as you did before…

The only good piece of advice I can give right now is to refer to your owner's manual.
I understand if it might be frustrating to figure that out (I had a bit of trouble sorting out the A6's manual at first), but I believe that you would be able to sort it out eventually.

As a last resort, you can bring your car back to the dealer.

    Good luck!

  2. [Laughing to myself] Um. . .That's what it does cupcake. It takes a snapshot of your current MPG as you drive. This number will vary greatly as you use different throttle positions and encounter different terrain, hills and such. Perfectly normal [said incredulously] All is normal, carry on.
    Edit:
You have to be smarter than the device you are using. You're hopeless. Visit a dealer for a tutorial.

  3. That's what it does. If you gun it at every stopsign, you'll get like 10mpg. The time is the total trip distance, and I think it doesn't like women driving it, so you'll have to get your husband to do that.
