I am bout to have my Honda inspected and I am affraid its not gonna pass. The tires look like they already need to be replaced (my husband confirmed it). I bought this car brand new out the lot and right now I have 37k miles on it. I always keep the right pressure in the tires (around 32 psi), the indicator for low pressure went off only once and I inflated the tires same day. I drive my car decently, no racing, off road etc. (geez I am a woman, pregnant and I have 2 little toddlers in the car – how bad can I drive). We drove a lot of highway miles, if that changes anything, state to state travel about 10-15 times a year. Now I am affraid it is not going to pass inspection, but even if it did, it does not change the fact the tires look like they have 150k miles on it, not just 37k. How is this possible?

Hi this is the asker posting from husband's account. Thank you for your responses. It is surprising to me that 40k is average life span on new vehicle tires, I had no idea. I discussed this with my coworkers (all women btw.) and they all shook their heads and told me they had vehicles with 80k, 90k miles on etc. and tires still good. So I was shocked. Well no matter if it passes inspection or not, we will have the tires replaced as soon as we save up money for it. Between making rent and paying monthly car payment on this honda which is 455/month and a monthly payment on my husbands truck and lets not forget expensive car insurance (have to have full coverage on vehicles that are being paid off) we have not whole much money to float but we are definitelly seeing it as a priority.
Btw. alignment of tires should be ok, I usually have my car multipoint checked with every oil change at certified honda dealership, if there was something wrong i would be told about it.
Tires sold as standard on new cars are made for sporty feel, not for tire wear. 37K miles is pretty good if the tires were not rotated – we only got 15K miles on our original front tires on a 1984 Dodge. FWD cars are really hard on front tire wear anyway.
thats fine, you dont get 150 k miles on tires anything close to 40 is on the money, now you get to stop driving around on your baldy tires and go buy new ones like an adult BEFORE THE INSPECTION. ALL you do is waste time if it does not pass you have to go back. Fix it first whats the problem?
average tyres have a life of 35-40 thousand, i would recomend 40 psi all round
In a simple words, if you feel the tires looks bad and need to be replaced, then REPLACE it please, if you really care about your baby, then the new tires price = nothing comparing about your safety and your baby life.
There are alot of kinds of tires, some are created for speed, some for grep, else for off road, etc, so life of tire sometimes depen on the way you drive, also the speed you go.
37k is usually about right for tires that come on a new vehicle. they dont put the best tires on them to help keep down cost. as long as its wearing even across the entire thats about all you can expect. if it has wear on the inside or outside more that the other you have an alignment problem. take it to a tire shop and have them look at it. its usually free of charge
Out of ALL of these answers only 2 of them mentioned anything about rotation, And that is why your tires are worn out! Tires should be rotated EVERY 7,500 miles and if they are not they go to H***! Some vehicles wear tires more unevenly than other vehicles (just like every person wears down a shoe differently) If the tread depth is below 2/32" it will fail State Inspection!
maybe it,s out of alignment. alignment can wear tires pretty fast if it,s off. did you have the front end checked out? maybe a ball joint or tie rod is starting to wear.
When you say inspected do you mean for smog? Normally for new cars you take it in after 4 years. Most tires last about 40-45K for new cars. You did not say if all 4 tires look worn. Normally If you have worn front tires it means it is out of alignment. Sometimes the balancing weights fall off the tires but thats only for 1 tire. Do you rotate your tires? Since you have 2 kids and another on the way then its well worth getting new tires and getting your suspension inspected. If all 4 tires are worn then 4 tire wheel alignment is in order.
