Car battery not charging while driving?

I have a '97 Ford Escort with what i think is a Serpentine belt or Alternator problem. The car seems to drain the battery while driving, running a almost new battery flat with a hour or two. Would replacing the belt fix this problem?

  1. simple test , start the car then disconnect the battery while its running , if the car shuts off its the alternator , the alternator keeps the car running without help from the battery , the battery just powers the accessories

  2. When your car is off, you should measure about 12.5 v across the battery, when the car is running, you should measure about 14.4 v. If not, the alternator isn't charging the battery and needs to be replaced. You can get simple digital voltmeters for under $10 at hard ware stores, radio shack, swap meets, etc.

  3. A worn belt will slip and the alternator will not give the desired output for the battery to charge.
Also be sure not to have window heaters switched on as these will drain the battery very quickly. Headlights on as well drain the battery even when driving. If the battery is not charging you would or should be getting a red warning light on the dash to tell you.

  4. i have a problem with my ram i just an alternator like 5 hours ago n is still not charging my battery what can it be any help
