  1. The normal change time is 80 k miles so you are somewhat early. However, did you have the water pump renewed at 94 k miles ? The problem is that the pump is driven by the cambelt and of course it can fail with drastic consequences.

  2. The Vw golf 1.8 petrol cam belt change interval is 60,000 miles or every 4 years which ever comes first this was altered from the 80k miles due to frequent reports of failures. I would recommend having it done every 4 years if you don't do a lot of millage as the rubber deteriorates with age resulting in the belt braking.

I would also recommend replacing the water pump and the auxiliary belt at the same time as the cam belt.

Here is a cam belt interval list for all (VAG) engines:

The Volkswagen & Audi Group (VAG) cam belt intervals vary depending on model and in our opinion can often be too long, which can lead to extensive and expensive engine damage.
We recommend the following cam belt replacement intervals:

    Model
    Interval

    1.4 / 1.6 16v
    40k Miles or 4 Years

    1.6 / 2.0 8v
    60k Miles or 4 Years

    1.8T 20V
    60k Miles or 4 Years

    2.0 / 2.0T 20V
    60k Miles or 4 Years

    2.0 FSI / FSI T
    80k Miles or 4 Years

    2.4 / 2.8 V6 Petrol
    80k Miles or 4 Years

    4 Cyl TDI (non PD)
    60k Miles or 4 Years

    3 / 4 Cyl TDI PD
40k – 60k Miles or 4 Years (depending on model)

    4 Cyl 2.0 TDI PD
    80k Miles or 4 Years

    5 Cyl TDI (e.g. T4)
    80k Miles or 4 Years

    6 Cyl TDI V6
    80k Miles or 4 Years
